WoW Leveling Guide: How to Level Fast in World of Warcraft

Leveling in World of Warcraft is faster than it has ever been, and the right choices can halve the time it takes. Whether this is your first character or your tenth alt, these are the habits that get you to the level cap with gear and gold to spare.

Pick the right class for leveling

Any class can level comfortably, but some make it smoother. Classes that heal themselves or have pets — Hunters, Warlocks, Death Knights, Paladins and Druids — rarely need to stop and rest, which saves a lot of time on your own. Tanks and healers get instant dungeon queues, which is the fastest leveling method of all.

Use Chromie Time and the fastest content

After the starting zones, Chromie Time lets you level in any older expansion, and the whole world scales to your level. Choose an expansion with compact zones and lots of quests near each other. Once you can, move to the current expansion's campaign, which also unlocks the reputation and features you'll need at max level.

Dungeons through the Group Finder

Queuing for random dungeons while you quest is the classic speed method: dungeons give big experience bonuses, gear upgrades and quest rewards inside the instance. As a damage dealer, keep questing while the queue runs; as a tank or healer you'll often get in within seconds.

Experience boosts that stack

A few bonuses together make a big difference:

  • War Mode: turning it on in a capital city adds bonus experience and quest rewards while questing in the open world.
  • Heirlooms: gear bought once that levels with your characters and adds bonus experience to all your alts.
  • Rested experience: logging out in an inn or city builds up rested XP that doubles kill experience for a while.
  • Seasonal events and limited-time experience buffs that Blizzard runs between patches.

Prepare for max level while you level

Pick up two professions early and gather as you go — you'll arrive at max level with materials to sell and skill already raised. Keep the gear you get from the campaign, learn your class's main rotation in dungeons, and set up a simple interface (a few addons for quests and bags are enough). That way you can step straight into world content, delves or heroic dungeons on your first day at the cap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to level in WoW?

Running dungeons through the Group Finder as a tank or healer, with heirlooms, rested experience and War Mode bonuses on. Damage dealers should quest while their queue runs.

Is Chromie Time worth using?

Yes. It lets you level in any older expansion with scaled zones, so you can pick the one you enjoy most or the one with the most compact quest hubs.

Should I buy a level boost?

A boost skips straight to max level but leaves you without the experience of playing your class. If you're new, level at least one character yourself first.
