WoW Gold Farming Guide: The Best Ways to Make Gold in World of Warcraft

Gold buys almost everything in World of Warcraft: consumables for raiding, crafted gear, mounts, transmog and even game time through the WoW Token. The good news is that you don't need to be a full-time Auction House trader to earn plenty of it. This guide covers the methods that work on every server, roughly in order of how quickly a new player can start using them.

Start with gathering professions

Herbalism, Mining and Skinning need no starting capital and their materials are always in demand, because every crafter, raider and Mythic+ player needs them. Pick two gathering professions on an alt or on your main if you don't care about crafting bonuses, and farm the zones of the current expansion, where prices are highest.

Gather while doing something else whenever you can: world quests, weekly events and flying to dungeon entrances all pass over nodes. A short, fixed loop you repeat until your bags are full beats wandering, and selling in stacks at the Auction House at a fair (not the absolute lowest) price moves volume without crashing the market.

  • Herbalism and Mining: herbs and ore feed Alchemy, Inscription, Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting and Engineering, so demand never stops.
  • Skinning: leather and hides are needed by Leatherworking; skinnable mobs in packs give the best rate.
  • Fishing: slow but relaxing, and some fish are cooking ingredients that sell well around raid releases.

Crafting and the crafting-order system

Crafting earns more than gathering once you have specialised. Modern WoW crafting rewards depth: put knowledge points into one specialisation, raise your skill and your crafts reach higher quality ranks that players pay a premium for. Crafting orders let other players pay you a commission to craft with their own materials, which is risk-free income.

Before you craft anything to sell, compare the price of the finished item with the cost of its materials. Many items are worth less than their reagents for most of a patch; the profitable window is usually the first weeks after a new raid tier or season, when everyone needs gear and consumables at once.

Old raid and dungeon farming

Max-level characters can solo older raids and dungeons in minutes. Besides chances at mounts and pets, they drop transmog gear that sells to collectors and a surprising amount of raw gold from bosses and vendor items. Pick a few old raids close to each other, clear them once a week per character, and sell the rare-looking transmog pieces at the Auction House while vendoring the rest.

Classes with strong area damage and self-healing (such as Demon Hunters, Death Knights and Retribution Paladins) are the most comfortable for solo farming.

Weekly routines that add up

A handful of activities pay gold and valuable materials every week with little effort:

  • World quests and weekly events with gold rewards — only the ones worth more than a few hundred gold.
  • Profession weekly quests and treasures, which give knowledge points and materials you can sell.
  • Your Garrison or other old player-housing features on alts, if your account still has them set up.
  • Selling unneeded crafting reagents, pets from old content and Bind-on-Equip drops instead of vendoring them.

Mistakes that cost gold

Undercutting by a huge margin, buying out whole markets you don't understand and leveling every crafting profession at once are the classic ways to lose gold. Learn one or two markets well instead. And stay away from bots, gold 'generators' and anyone offering gold for your account login: they get accounts banned or stolen, while legitimate methods only cost time.

When buying gold makes sense

If you'd rather spend your play time raiding than farming, buying gold from another player is an option. Use a marketplace with escrow so your payment is only released after the gold arrives, never share your password, and prefer sellers who deliver through the in-game mail or face-to-face trade. Blizzard's own WoW Token is the officially supported way to turn real money into gold.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to make gold in WoW as a new player?

Gathering professions in the current expansion's zones. They need no starting gold, and herbs, ore and leather always sell at the Auction House.

Is soloing old raids still worth it for gold?

Yes, especially across several characters. Old raids give raw gold, sellable transmog and chances at rare mounts in a few minutes each.

Can I get banned for buying WoW gold?

Buying gold from third parties breaks Blizzard's terms of service, so there is always some risk. The WoW Token is the only fully supported option; if you buy elsewhere, avoid deals that require your account login.
