War Thunder Beginner Guide: Nations, Research and Silver Lions

War Thunder lets you fight with tanks, aircraft and ships from many nations. The research trees are huge, so a little planning saves a lot of grinding.

Choose a nation and a branch

Each nation has its own tech tree and playstyle. Pick one nation and one branch — ground or air — to focus on at first. Spreading research across many trees slows you down.

Game modes

Modes differ a lot:

  • Arcade: simpler controls and markers, great for learning.
  • Realistic: more realistic physics and fewer helpers, with better rewards.
  • Simulator: full realism for experienced players.

Research efficiently

Research points come from playing vehicles near the battle rating of what you're researching. Research upgrades for your current vehicles too — modules like better ammo and parts make a big difference.

Earn Silver Lions

Silver Lions buy vehicles and pay for repairs. Play objectives, capture zones and help your team for better rewards, and avoid losing expensive vehicles needlessly. Repair costs rise at higher battle ratings.

Premium vehicles

Premium vehicles earn more rewards and can speed up research for vehicles of the same nation. They're useful if you play a lot, but not required to enjoy the game.
