Valorant Ranked Guide: How Ranks Work and How to Climb

Competitive mode is where most Valorant players spend their time once they know the basics. Understanding how the rank system works — and what actually moves your rank — makes the climb a lot less frustrating.

How the ranks work

Ranks go from Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant and Immortal up to Radiant, with three tiers in each rank below Immortal. You unlock Competitive after reaching the required account level, then play placement matches to get your first rank. After that you gain or lose Rank Rating (RR) every match; enough RR moves you up a tier.

Winning is what matters most, but strong individual performance in a win earns more RR, and in a close loss can soften the drop. Long losing streaks happen to everyone — don't change everything after three bad games.

Habits that climb

Small, consistent habits move your rank more than flashy plays:

  • Warm up for 10–15 minutes in the Range or a deathmatch before ranked.
  • Play two roles well, so you can fill what the team lacks.
  • Communicate: call where enemies are and what abilities they used.
  • Buy as a team — matching your team's economy wins more rounds than saving alone.
  • Stop after two losses in a row and take a break; tilt costs more than one game.

Learn maps, not just aim

Every map has common angles, rotation routes and default plans. Learn two or three lineups for your agent per map and where enemies usually play. At lower ranks especially, simply knowing where people stand wins a lot of duels.

Duo queue and coaching

Playing with a friend who communicates well is one of the easiest ways to win more games. Reviewing your own matches, or getting coaching from a better player, shows mistakes you don't notice while playing — usually positioning and peeking too early.

Frequently asked questions

How do Valorant placement matches work?

After unlocking Competitive you play a set of placement games, and your results and performance decide your starting rank.

What is RR in Valorant?

Rank Rating: points you gain for wins and lose for defeats. Earn enough RR and you move up a tier.

Why do I lose more RR than I gain?

Your RR changes depend on wins, performance and how your rank compares to your hidden skill estimate. Keep winning and the gains usually even out.
