Overwatch 2 Competitive Tips: How to Climb in Every Role

Keep a small hero pool

Pick two or three heroes per role and get good at them. You'll learn their matchups, cooldown timings and best positions much faster than if you switch every game. Have one flexible option for maps or enemy compositions where your main struggles.

Tank: create space, don't overstay

With only one tank per team, your positioning decides where the fight happens. Take space when your supports can see you, use cover to break line of sight, and back off before your defensive cooldowns run out. Dying first usually loses the fight for the whole team.

Damage: pick the right targets

Look for angles that force the enemy to look in two directions, and focus targets your team can finish together — usually supports or a tank that's out of cooldowns. Getting a pick and pulling back is better than diving alone and trading your life for it.

Support: stay alive and use your utility

A living support is worth more than one extra heal. Stay near cover, keep track of enemy flankers and call for help when you're dived. Supports also deal damage — when your team is healthy, adding damage or utility is often what wins the fight.

Ultimate economy and fight timing

Many games are decided between fights:

• Track enemy ultimates and don't waste yours on a fight that's already lost.
• Regroup after a lost fight instead of trickling in one by one.
• Combine ultimates with your team for a decisive push.
• Check the kill feed to know when the enemy is down a player.

Mental game

Competitive rank changes over many games, not one. Mute toxic players, take breaks after two losses in a row and review a replay when you keep dying in the same spot.
