Minecraft Survival Guide for Beginners: Your First Days, Step by Step

Minecraft survival is open-ended, which is exactly what makes the first hour confusing. Follow these steps and you'll go from punching trees to enchanted diamond gear without losing everything on the first night.

Day one

Before the first night falls:

  • Collect wood and make a crafting table, then wooden tools.
  • Find stone and craft a stone pickaxe, sword and axe.
  • Kill a few sheep for wool and craft a bed — sleeping skips the night.
  • Collect food from animals and cook it in a furnace.
  • Build or dig a small shelter, and light it with torches.

Iron, then diamonds

Iron is your first big upgrade: armour, tools, buckets and shields. Find it in caves and mountainsides, smelt it in a furnace and craft a full set. Diamonds are found deep underground — in current versions, the best levels are just above the deepslate bottom of the world (around Y -58). Strip-mining or exploring large caves at that depth with an iron pickaxe is the classic method.

Food and farms

A small wheat farm near a water source and a pen of cows or chickens means you never run out of food. Villages are great early finds: their farms, beds and villagers save a lot of work, and villagers trade useful items for emeralds.

Enchanting and the Nether

An enchanting table (with bookshelves around it) lets you add powerful enchantments to your gear using experience levels and lapis lazuli. Build a Nether portal from obsidian once you have diamond tools and fire resistance or good armour; the Nether has resources such as blaze rods and ancient debris for Netherite, the best gear in the game.

Stay safe

Creepers explode, lava is everywhere underground and falling into a ravine ends many worlds. Carry a water bucket, light up areas so mobs don't spawn, and keep valuables in chests at home before exploring.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do on my first night in Minecraft?

Make a bed from wool and sleep through it, or stay in a small lit shelter until morning. Use the day to collect wood, stone and food.

What Y level are diamonds most common?

In current versions, diamonds are most common deep underground, just above the bottom of the world, around Y -58.

When should I go to the Nether?

Once you have iron or diamond armour, good tools, food and blocks. A water bucket doesn't work there, so bring fire resistance if you can.
