Clash of Clans Upgrade Guide: What to Upgrade First

Don't rush your Town Hall

Upgrading the Town Hall unlocks new buildings and troops, but it also makes you face stronger opponents and lowers the loot you get from weaker bases. Finish most offence, defence and hero upgrades before moving up. A 'maxed' base at a lower Town Hall is far stronger than a rushed one.

Upgrade priority

A common order that works for most players:

• Laboratory first, so troop research never stops.
• Army Camps, Barracks and Spell Factory to strengthen attacks.
• Heroes — keep at least one hero upgrading whenever possible.
• Resource storages, so you can afford the next big upgrade.
• Defences such as Inferno Towers, Eagle Artillery and air defences.
• Walls with spare resources between other upgrades.

Keep every builder busy

Idle builders are lost progress. Plan long upgrades before you go to sleep and short ones during the day. Gems are best spent on extra builder huts rather than speeding up timers. Builder potions and other magic items from events and the Clan Games are great for big upgrades.

Farming resources

Cheap, fast armies are best for farming loot. Look for bases with full collectors and storages, attack often while your Laboratory works, and use your Shield time wisely. Your clan's donations save time too.

Clan Wars and Clan Games

Join an active clan as early as possible. Clan Wars and Clan War Leagues reward loot and medals for good attacks, and Clan Games give magic items. Ask clanmates for attack advice — practising one strategy until you master it usually beats switching every war.
